PRESS RELEASE

GREENFIELD RECORDS’ BIG 15

When: JUNE 8, 2024 1PM -10 PM
Where: HAWKS & REED
Tickets: $10 – $20 sliding scale (no one turned away)

GREENFIELD RECORDS (fka John Doe Jr) is thrilled to invite you to its BIG 15 on Saturday, June 8, 2024. We changed our name and signage last summer but we’re still the same Scott & Maria who’ve been selling vintage vinyl records & CDs on Main St. since 2009. A new name for the little city and its people who have been so good to us these past 15 years. Now it’s time to have a birthday party ~ In synergy with Hawks&Reed, a magnet for music and community. We’d love to toast our regulars (and not-so-regulars) from across the Happy Valley and beyond.

Family & friends – some of whom’ve played shows since the early days of JDJR basement hijinx – are graciously converging on Greenfield for a full day of performances and DJing. There will be crates of records to dig (not just ours). Cocina Lupita will be open 11-8 for yummy Salvadorian food.

The Afternoon – performers with DJs between::

Noise Nomads (never-before-heard sounds) will get the day rolling at 1 p.m. There’ll be Old Pam’s dreamy vocal soundscapes, solo psych guitar by Willie Lane, solo electric punkish guitar by The Eye and Stella Kola, a 6-piece playing folk-leaning songs in the odd & lovely region between joy & melancholy.

The Transition – DJs! Records! Food! Fresh air if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Night::

High-energy bands step up at 6ish – Creative Writing (guitar-based indie rock), Big Destiny (multi-instrumental avant rock jazz) and Moth’s Frog (zesty, jump up-n-down, complex-time-sig  guitar rock from Montreal – feat. Scott & Maria’s very own offspring Rufus!). DJ Skotrok will bring it all home with Latin Freestyle on the decks.

We hope you’ll join us!

BAND DESCRIPTIONS

Noise Nomads

Byron Coley of Forced Exposure and Feeding Tube Records wrote:

“Jeff Hartford — Mr. Noise Nomad, himself — approaches every show like a happening, and he creates a vibe and vision that will hang in yr head and ears long after the fire has burned out (as it were). […] There is NOTHING like a Noise Nomads concert. Nothing.”

OLD PAM creates dreamy vocal soundscapes.

Stella Kola began as a songwriting project between poet/vocalist Beverly Ketch & musician Robert Thomas and quickly bloomed into a 6 piece group featuring magical stalwarts of the local underground. In 2022, the group self released an album of quiet & enchanting songs which extend from the folk tradition into a peculiar modernity, hovering in an odd & lovely region just between joy & melancholy.

The Eye: Anthony Pasquarosa – solo punkish electric guitar. His need to create is like a never ending search. He shouts at the audience in HC/Punk bands, pays tribute to early eighties electro punk and late sixties psych, plays old time music and is an excellent player of all stringed instruments.

Willie Lane

willielane.bandcamp.com

(experimental country blues folk psych)

Elliot Sharp at tinymixtapes.com on Willie Lane’s album Guitar Army of One:

“Lane […] plays an extremely loose, primal, noisy type of improvised and extra-heavy dirt-blues. He first popped onto my radar with Recliner Ragas, released in 2006 on Matt Valentine’s Child Of Microtones label. It’s a gnarled gem — pure grit. Same goes for everything he’s released since. […] Guitar Army Of One […] is lovely and jangly, with bizarro screeches and boomy kraangs at all the sweetest spots.

Big Destiny are an exuberant, enthusiastic avant jazz crew of multi-instrumentalists feat. powerful vocalist Nico, who was dancing at store shows since our inception.

Creative Writing is a new project from some minds and fingers that brought you Luxor Rentals, Jeanines, Estrogen Highs, Huevos II, Sore Eros, etc. Guitar based indie pop drawing on a deep admiration for artists like the Clean, Big Star, Neil Young, Wipers, Go-Betweens, Love, etc

MOTH’S FROG (MONTREAL – formerly known as Rufus Cesspool)

Zesty, complex-time-signture, jump up and down guitar rock.

Started as Rufus’s solo project in our house during the pandemic before they moved to Montreal. Proud parents alert! Now a 4-piece (rufus+tomas+jack+gabe).

Their 2021 EP Collage Rock is available on Spotify, etc. and here:  https://rufuscesspool.bandcamp.com
